In 2010, I adopted a dog with short sᴘɪɴᴇ sʏɴᴅʀᴏᴍᴇ, Cuda, and started researching the rare condition, which causes vertebrae along the spine and neck to fuse, shortening the sᴘɪɴᴇ. Dogs with short sᴘɪɴᴇ sʏɴᴅʀᴏᴍᴇ all share the same comical appearance, with sloped backs, elongated faces, and short, thick necks. Cuda’s appearance was unlike anything Julie had ever seen. These dogs are just as mobile and healthy as any other dog and live long, happy lives
Since then, I’ve gotten in touch with the owners of 21 more dogs from all over the world with short sᴘɪɴᴇ sʏɴᴅʀᴏᴍᴇ over Facebook. Their stories circulated on the Internet. In March, a photo post appeared on Cuda’s page for a short sᴘɪɴᴇ sʏɴᴅʀᴏᴍᴇ dog named Rambo who was looking for a home.
Julie didn’t know what was wrong with the canine, but she knew that Cuda belonged to her family. It was easy to see that Rambo didn’t look like other dogs. “I was a little surprised,” Ocampo told. “I thought he was born this way because his parents were related.” Ocampo saw past that. “With a face so beautiful, Rambo’s differences do not matter,” she said.
“The moment he saw me, he walked towards me and started to sniff me, telling me to play with him,” Gof told. “He knew I was his new life companion.” Her future started revealing itself in my head and I knew I had to be her future. Her body was so unusual I felt no one would give her a chance.
Julie’s hubby was reticent to bring another doggy into their home because the couple formerly had 4 pets. But, after some persuading, he agreed. Julie learned that Cuda had a short-chine pattern, also known as the baboon canine pattern. At the time, the doggy’s twisted chine was sǫᴜɪsʜɪɴɢ her organs together.
Julie and her hubby Scott loved Cuda no matter her appearance, but the public didn’t partake in that joy at first. People goggled laughed, and refocused at Cuda on her first trip to the pet store, Julie ran out of the store as soon as possible. Rather than giving up, Julie made the utmost of Cuda’s unusual features. She entered the doggy in the 2011 World’s Ugliest Dog contest.
Cuda didn’t win, but she did come a media darling. There were no further aesthetics of nausea thrown her way, only kisses, love, and a desire to help special requirements pets.
